Understanding the Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedure
The gastric sleeve procedure, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, involves the removal of approximately 80-85% of the stomach, reshaping what remains into a tube or “sleeve.” The objective is to limit the amount of food intake without impairing the normal absorption of vitamins and minerals.
The laparoscopic approach to this surgery involves making several very small incisions and is performed using camera-guided instruments. This reduces scarring, postoperative discomfort, and recovery time.
The average expected weight loss with the gastric sleeve operation is between 55% and 70% of excess body weight; you may lose more or you may lose less. Maximum weight loss occurs within two years, postoperatively.¹
Benefits of the Gastric Sleeve
The Gastric sleeve surgery is the only bariatric surgical procedure that involves neither intestinal reconfiguration, as in gastric bypass, nor a foreign body, as with the LAP-BAND. The surgery is relatively low risk.
- Preservation of the pyloric valve, which regulates the emptying of the stomach and makes a person feel full for a longer period of time
- Reduced production of hunger-stimulating hormones
- Preserved GI tract anatomy with no re-routing of the small intestine. Food is then digested normally, with less risk of nutritional deficiencies or ulcers.
