The Facts About Gastric Bypass

The testimonials, statements, and opinions presented on our website are only applicable to the individuals depicted, and may not be representative of the experience of others. The testimonials are not indicative of future results or success of any other individuals. In short, surgery involves risk, results may vary from patient to patient and procedure to procedure. WLIAZ referred practitioners cannot guarantee your results will be the same. Click here for terms and conditions. There are two important components that make up gastric bypass surgery: restrictive and malabsorptive.

  • Restrictive – Your surgeon permanently reduces the size of the stomach to approximately two ounces, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time.
  • Malabsorptive – The new, smaller stomach is attached to the small intestine at a lower point, bypassing most of the stomach and the beginning portion of the small intestine. This means that digestion will not begin until further down your digestive tract, thus fewer calories are absorbed.

The average expected weight loss with a gastric bypass operation is between 60% and 80% of excess body weight¹. This is an average and you may lose more or you may lose less. *

Most importantly, obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, gastric reflux and sleep apnea can be resolved or greatly improved within the first year of surgery.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery in Arizona can be performed laparoscopically for some patients. This technique involves a series of small incisions through which small, long-handled instruments are guided by a tiny camera. This approach offers a reduced rate of complications, minimizes scarring and may improve comfort and shorten recovery time.

The Open Approach

The open approach to surgery involves a long incision through which the surgeon accesses the abdomen directly. This approach may be preferable for patients with certain conditions, including:

  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Complicating medical issues
  • Very high BMI
