Do You Qualify?
To qualify for bariatric surgery, you typically must demonstrate:
- A Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40, or over 35¹ when you also have at least one weight-related medical condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease
- Numerous failed attempts at losing weight through diet and exercise
- No history of drug or alcohol abuse or psychiatric disorders
What is BMI?
Today, the medical community measures obesity by using a mathematical formula called a Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women. BMI can be determined by dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared and then multiplying by 705. For example, a woman who is 5’6″ and weighs 190 would have a BMI of 31. Having a high BMI should be taken very seriously and can be a matter of life and death. Patients with a high BMI typically are at high risk of having obesity-related health issues also known as co-morbidities. Some examples are: mild to severe joint pain, back pain, hypertension, sleep apnea, diabetes, depression, and more.
If your BMI places you in the category of obese or morbidly obese (or even on the high end of overweight) you may be a candidate for the LAP-BAND® procedure and other surgical weight loss options. In some instances, insurance might cover the cost the surgery.
Is Your Weight Affecting Your Health?
It makes sense to consider weight loss surgery when your weight is contributing to one or more life-threatening medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis, gastrointestinal esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and sleep apnea. While surgery is not free of risks, living with a life-threatening condition is often more dangerous.

- Make exercise a regular part of your life
- Commit to lifelong dietary changes such as limiting daily calories and avoiding specific foods if necessary
- Get emotional support when you need it
- Return for follow-up health assessments
