The Advantages of Reversible Bariatric Surgery (gastric plication)

We don’t need to tell you that losing weight is an incredibly difficult journey, which is why many people turn to bariatric surgery to finally gain the upper hand on their weight problems. While effective, most of these types of surgeries permanently change your digestive system or require further procedures to remain effective.

If these issues give you pause, you may want to consider a form of reversible bariatric surgery called gastric plication.

At the Weight Loss Institute of Arizona, our team of bariatric surgeons has extensive experience helping our patients lose considerable amounts of weight through a wide range of procedures. Our goal in offering a number of different choices is to allow patients to choose one that they’re comfortable with, which is why we’ve included gastric plication.

Here’s a look at a few of the advantages of this reversible bariatric surgery.

Behind gastric plication

Gastric plication is a relatively new approach to bariatric surgery that’s designed to offer patients the best of all worlds — namely losing weight without permanently altering their digestive systems.

With gastric plication, we use the latest laparoscopic techniques to reduce the size of your stomach. Making only very small incisions, we use specialized instruments to fold your stomach lining inside itself, reducing your stomach’s size by around 75%.

The advantages of gastric plication

There are several advantages to a gastric plication, including:

Everything is intact

With a gastric plication, we shrink the size of your stomach without removing any of the organ or rerouting your digestive system, as we would with a gastric bypass. All of your digestive organs are left intact, just slightly altered in a way that we can go back in and reverse.

No foreign objects

Another advantage of this approach is that we don’t implant anything, as we would with a procedure like gastric banding, which often requires adjusting, as well.

It’s highly effective

While gastric plication is relatively new, early data show that the procedure garners great results. For example, one study of 202 cases found that weight loss at the one-year mark was 57.84%, which increased to 68% at the four-year mark.

It’s reversible

Once you’ve reached your weight-loss goal and you’ve successfully kept the weight off through changes in your diet and lifestyle, you may reverse the procedure if you desire. To do this, we go back in laparoscopically and unfold the lining of your stomach, restoring it to its original size.

If you’d like to explore whether you’re a good candidate for gastric plication, please contact one of our locations in Tempe, Glendale, Mesa, Tucson, or Phoenix, Arizona, to set up a consultation.
