Can a Lap-Band® Help You Reach Your Weight Loss Goals?

If you’re ready to put an end to your weight-loss roller coaster, bariatric surgery is one of the most effective options available, but not all bariatric surgeries are alike.

At the Weight Loss Institute of Arizona, our team has one mission: help our patients take control of their health through weight loss. If you’ve struggled with dieting to no avail, bariatric surgery may be the best solution.

To help you weigh your different options, in the following we take a deeper dive into our Lap-Band® procedure and how it can help you reach your weight loss goals.

How the Lap-Band works

Our Lap-Band procedure is fairly simple. We place an adjustable ring around your stomach that shrinks the available space and slows your digestive process by allowing only smaller amounts of food to pass through at a time.

There are many benefits to this approach to bariatric surgery, so let’s get right to it.

No change in anatomy

A Lap-Band procedure appeals to many of our patients because we’re not making any permanent changes to their anatomy.

With some bariatric procedures, we may remove portions of your stomach or reconfigure your digestive tract to reduce absorption of food (gastric bypass surgery, for example). And these changes are largely irreversible

With the Lap-Band, we’re using an external (and removable) device instead of changing your anatomy.

Less downtime

Since we’re not making any major changes to your digestive tract and we use minimally invasive surgical techniques to place your Lap-Band, your recovery is much faster than other bariatric surgeries. Not to mention, there’s less risk of complications, like infection.

Adjust as you go

Another advantage of the Lap-Band system is that we can adjust the device as you go so you meet your weight loss goals. The band that we place around your stomach is designed to be filled with a saline solution, which means we can adjust the tightness of the band.

During the Lap-Band procedure, we place a discreet port under your skin, which allows us to fill or drain your Lap-Band. Most of our patients require five to eight Lap-Band adjustments during the first year, which we accomplish quickly and easily right in our offices.

Lap-Bands work

Of course, all of the benefits we outline above mean nothing if the Lap-Band doesn’t help you lose weight.

To put some numbers to the success rate of the Lap-Band, studies conducted by the manufacturer have found that the Lap-Band provides an average of 46% excess weight lost in the first year. And patients kept off an average of 60% of their excess body weight after five years.

If you’d like to explore whether you’re a good candidate for the Lap-Band, please contact one of our six locations in Tempe, Glendale, Mesa, Tucson, or Phoenix, Arizona, to set up a consultation.
