Am I Preparing My Protein Shake Properly?

One of the pitfalls of losing weight through your diet is that you may not be getting enough of the nutrients you need to keep your body strong and healthy. If you want to lose weight while maintaining your energy, protein shakes should make their way into your daily regimen.

To help ensure that you’re getting the most out of your protein shakes, our team of weight loss experts here at Weight Loss Institute of Arizona wants to provide a few tips.

Finding the right protein powder base

At the core of your protein shake is a protein powder, so find one that best suits your needs.

A great all-around powder is one based on whey protein, which provides most of the amino acids your body needs, and it’s easy to digest. Soy protein is another great all-around powder that also helps to build bone mass.

Other common powder bases include eggs, hemp, pea, or milk , all of which are great sources of protein, but be mindful if you have any food allergies.

If you want to take a vegan approach to your protein shake, we suggest using one that features brown rice, which is plant-based and gluten-free.

Get only what you need from the powder

When you choose a protein powder, take a close look at the list of ingredients to make sure the protein base is the main ingredient.

You’ll also find that many powders have flavors, such as vanilla or chocolate, but make sure these flavors don’t come at a cost. More specifically, steer clear of powders that contain high amounts of sugar or sugar substitutes.

Pay close attention to carbohydrate content and choose one that has a low carb count.

Preparing your protein shake

Once you have the protein base, it’s time to make your shake. There are many different ways to make a shake using your preferred ingredients, and we advise you to mix it up a little.

For example, if you love the taste of blueberries, throw some powder, blueberries, and a liquid into a blender, and then drink it down. Blueberries do contain sugar and a few go a long way — both in nutrition and in taste.

To get the most out of your shake, add a green leafy vegetable, such as spinach or kale, which you won’t taste because of the blueberries.

Speaking of flavors, there are some shake ingredients that pack a big punch when it comes to flavor. No matter what you put in your shake, if you add some mint, banana, or some ginger, these strong flavors ensure that you enjoy the taste.

Another great tip is to use frozen fruits and vegetables, which make for a refreshing cool drink in our Arizona heat.
