5 Tips for Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery

Between 2011 and 2019, bariatric surgeries in the United States jumped by more than 100,000 to more than a quarter million. The main reason for this jump is that weight loss surgeries are highly effective in helping people lose excess weight.

If our team of bariatric experts here at Weight Loss Institute of Arizona has scheduled your weight loss surgery, we’ve provided you with lead-up instructions, and you should feel prepared. Still, there are some things that you can do at home to smooth your journey, and we review five great tips here.

Clean out the kitchen

Your eating habits must change dramatically shortly before and long after your bariatric surgery, so we recommend removing evidence of past eating habits. 

Now is the time to go through your kitchen and pantry to clear out any temptations that might lurk there. A good place to start is with any processed snacks, cereals, or other calorie-rich, but nutrient-poor items.

Create your own space in the kitchen

If you’re living with people who still want their favorite chips and cookies, carve out a space in your pantry or commandeer a cupboard for your own food. If you mix your newer, healthier foods in with the rest of the family’s, it can be all too easy to grab one of their packets of chips.

By creating your own space, you create mental and physical boundaries that help keep you on track. 

Prepare some foods in advance

Depending on which weight loss procedure you opt for, there are different dietary instructions afterward. If you’re going to be on a liquid diet to start, we provide you with a list of items that you should have on hand.

When you do get the greenlight to add solid foods, it might be helpful to have some small, frozen meals prepared in advance. For example, you can make vegetarian lasagna with whole grain pasta and freeze small portions. Or you can prepare some egg white frittata (with plenty of vegetables) and, again, freeze meal-sized servings in separate baggies.

Talk with your family and friends

Many social events are centered around eating, so talk with family and friends before your surgery about your goals and wishes. 

In the early days after your surgery, you may want to forego a picnic or pizza-and-movie night until you feel comfortable at these types of events, and it’s important that your friends and family understand.

Find support groups

Before you embark on weight loss surgery, it might be a good idea to find, and attend, a support group meeting so you have this resource already in place. After your surgery, you may find that gathering with people who’ve already been through the process, or who are going through it at the same time as you, can be extremely helpful.
