Understanding Sleeve Gastrectomy
The sleeve gastrectomy procedure involves the removal of approximately 85% of the stomach, reshaping what remains into a tube or "sleeve." The objective is to limit the amount of food intake without impairing the normal absorption of vitamins and minerals. The surgery can be performed as a first stage procedure (for patients with a very high BMI), or as a stand-alone procedure.
The laparoscopic approach involves making several very small incisions through which the surgery is performed using camera-guided instruments. This reduces scarring, postoperative discomfort, and recovery time.
The average expected weight loss with the sleeve gastrectomy operation is between 55% and 70% of excess body weight. This is an average. You may lose more or you may lose less. Maximum weight loss occurs within two years postoperatively.
