The Facts About Gastric Bypass
There are two important components of gastric bypass surgery: restrictive and malabsorptive.
- Restrictive – Your surgeon permanently reduces the size of the stomach to approximately 2 ounces, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time.
- Malabsorptive – The new, smaller stomach is attached to the small intestine at a lower point, bypassing most of the stomach and the beginning portion of the small intestine. This means that digestion will not begin until further down your digestive tract, thus fewer calories are absorbed.
The average expected weight loss with a gastric bypass operation is between 60% and 70% of excess body weight. This is an average. You may lose more or you may lose less. Maximum weight loss occurs within two years postoperatively.
Most importantly, obesity related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, gastric reflux and sleep apnea can be resolved or greatly improved within the first year of surgery.

Open vs. Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery in Arizona can be performed laparoscopically for some patients. This technique involves a series of small incisions through which small, long-handled instruments are guided by a tiny camera. This approach offers a reduced rate of complications, minimizes scarring and may improve comfort and shorten recovery time.
The open approach to surgery involves a long incision through which the surgeon accesses the abdomen directly. This approach may be preferable for patients with certain conditions, including:
- Previous abdominal surgery
- Complicating medical issues
- Very high BMI
The best way to know which procedure is right for you is to discuss your needs and concerns with one of our compassionate, experienced bariatric surgeons. Request your consultation online or RSVP to one of our weight loss seminars today.
