Understanding Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy procedure involves the removal of approximately 85% of the stomach, reshaping what remains into a tube or “sleeve.” The objective is to limit the amount of food intake without impairing the normal absorption of vitamins and minerals. The surgery can be performed as a first stage procedure (for patients with a very high BMI), or as a stand-alone procedure.

The laparoscopic approach involves making several very small incisions and is performed using camera-guided instruments. This reduces scarring, postoperative discomfort, and recovery time.

The average expected weight loss with the sleeve gastrectomy operation is between 55% and 70% of excess body weight. This is an average. You may lose more or you may lose less. Maximum weight loss occurs within two years postoperatively.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is the only bariatric surgery that involves neither intestinal reconfiguration, as in gastric bypass, nor a foreign body, as with the LAP-BAND. The surgery is relatively low risk, and there is very little chance that revision will be necessary in the future. Other benefits with this procedure include:

  • Preservation of the pyloric valve, which regulates the emptying of the stomach and makes a person feel full for a longer period of time
  • Reduced production of hunger-stimulating hormones
  • Normal stomach and gastrointestinal tract anatomy is not altered. Food is then  digested normally, with less risk of nutritional deficiencies or ulcers
