 THE GASTRIC BY PASS PROCEDURE

Gastric Bypass

Weight Loss Institute of Arizona also performs the Gastric Bypass surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y, to help you attain permanent weight loss. This surgery achieves its effects by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach, from which the rest of the stomach is permanently divided and separated.

A segment of small intestine is attached to this pouch allowing food to bypass most of the stomach and the first part of the intestine.

This procedure is highly effective for weight loss because it reduces the amount of food that can be eaten at one time, and fewer calories can be absorbed by the new digestive track.

1. Gastric bypass has both a restrictive and malabsorptive component:

  • Restrictive component: your stomach will be stapled and transected to form approximately a 30cc gastric pouch.
  • Malabsorptive component: the proximal, or beginning, portion of your small intestine will be bypassed. This means that your food content and bile content will not come into contact with one another until further down your digestive tract.

2. The expected weight loss with gastric bypass operation is between 60% and 70% excess body weight. This is an average. You may lose more or you may lose less.

3. Maximum weight loss occurs within 2 years postoperatively.

4. Most importantly, obesity related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, gastric reflux and sleep apnea are dramatically reversed within the 1st year of surgery.
